The world of Police and Law Enforcement is an island in many ways. Women often have to fight twice as hard to prove their mettle. ACP Geetha Kulkarni stands as an exception in the force. And she is a large-scale thinker who will get you solutions right where you stand stunned at the depth of them. We praise her for riding her Tiger bike way back on Bangalore’s busiest roads. And we praise her for the moment and the momentum Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, then honorable President of India called her from afar and held her close to posing for a photograph as a recognition of her great courage, dedication, and contributions to service. Her journey is of perseverance, dedication, and an unwavering commitment.

The Making of a Leader

Geetha’s strength and determination were shaped early in life by her mother. Her mother is a terror, strict yet compassionate.  Mother instilled in her the values of discipline, perseverance, and empathy. Her influence became the bedrock of her character, teaching her that true leadership is about balancing firmness with understanding. Geetha Kulkarni’s journey to become an Assistant Commissioner of Police was far from easy. But she could face them easy. Take it easy policy!

Her initial ambition was to join the defense services. When faced with setbacks, instead of giving up, she redirected her focus to law enforcement. The path was with challenges, from rigorous selection processes to the demanding realities of police work. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken, fuelled by her dream to serve and to make a difference wherever she works and in whatever capacity she works.

When she joined the Police force, field assignments were rarely entrusted to women. Yet she was among the first female officers to step into these demanding roles, shattering stereotypes and creating the way for others. In the early days, many doubted whether women could handle the physically and mentally taxing responsibilities of fieldwork. Geetha Kulkarni proved them wrong.

As a “pilot projector,” she not only took on challenging assignments but excelled in them, demonstrating that women could lead just as effectively as men. Her pioneering efforts inspired other women officers to follow in her footsteps, gradually changing the perception of women in law enforcement.

Over time, the professional landscape began to shift. While many women officers moved toward desk jobs, Geetha Kulkarni remained committed to fieldwork. Crowd management is an art for her as simple as she could manage the students in a large classroom. Even this is a challenge today even for toughest amongst the men. Management is an art!

Geetha Kulkarni’s work in traffic management is legendary. In the bustling streets of Bangalore on the Residency Road, MG Road, and St. Mark’s Road, she became a familiar figure, riding her Tiger bike and enforcing the law with firmness and fairness. Her presence was not just about discipline but also about connection. She earned the respect of everyone from auto-rickshaw drivers to college students, not through fear, but through her approachable and understanding manner. Smile took her miles ahead in her mission.

Her innovative approach to traffic management brought tangible improvements handy for her. From relocating bus stands to streamlining traffic flow at critical junctions, Geetha Kulkarni’s initiatives were both practical and visionary. She introduced separate lanes for private and KSRTC buses at the famous state bank in Mangalore, enforced stricter regulations for auto-rickshaws, and championed sustainable solutions for urban traffic challenges in all dimensions. Her approach made traffic so very smooth through and through at every point in Mangalore.

Recognized by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

One of the most significant milestones in Geetha Kulkarni’s career was her close interaction with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Her strategic thinking and innovative approaches caught the attention of the then President. It was in the year 2006 during Dr. Kalam’s visit to Bangalore to attend the National Women’s Convention. He had personally come forward and congratulated her on her work. That moment was not just a recognition of her abilities but a testimony to the impact of her contributions.
