Mangalore Takes a Giant Leap in Water Safety: Commissioner Makes Buoyancy Vests Mandatory
In a groundbreaking move, the Commissioner of Police, Sri Anupam Agarwal, has made it mandatory for individuals to wear buoyancy vests when entering water in and around Mangalore. This decision comes after a pressing intervention by Dr. PP Devan, Professor at AJ Medical College, who alerted the Commissioner to the alarming number of drowning deaths in the coastal regions.
According to Dr. Devan, as many as 10 youngsters have lost their lives to drowning in the past year alone. This staggering statistic prompted Dr. Devan to take immediate action, leading to the Commissioner’s swift response.
At a press conference held by Dr. PP Devan, the details of the new mandate were revealed. As of now, anyone entering water in the region must wear a buoyancy vest with a minimum rating of 150 Newton. This measure is designed to prevent drowning deaths by ensuring that individuals are kept afloat, even if they become unconscious.
The buoyancy vest is designed to self-right an unconscious person onto their back, keeping their face out of the water. This simple yet effective solution has the potential to save countless lives in the region.
By making buoyancy vests mandatory, Mangalore is setting a new standard for water safety in India. This move is expected to have a significant impact on reducing drowning deaths and promoting a culture of safety in the region.
Dr. Devan’s timely intervention and the Commissioner’s prompt response have been hailed as a major success in the fight against drowning deaths. As the city moves forward with this new initiative, it’s clear that the lives of countless individuals will be forever changed. Dr. Devan was accompanied by NV Paulose, Chairman of Global TV in the press conference.
