Medical education is usually judged by thick textbooks, long clinical training, and special titles. Dr Ashok Hegde, Dean of AJ Medical College offer a very unique idea to you and me. It was a thoughtful conversation with Rev Fr Praveen Martis SJ, Vice Chancellor of St Aloysius University, Dr PP Devan, respected professor and master healer, and me, He told the best degree is Be Calm; it was quick healing and super inspiring. It is applicable to anyone and everyone. We all should take master degrees in what he called Be Calm Education.

He explained that Be Calm is not a dedicated course or an academic subject. It is something that we should graduate over a period of time dealing with our own mind. This the foundation on which every good doctor to build their medical knowledge. It is the quality that decides whether a doctor will simply treat an illness or truly heal a person.
This is applicable for every other person and field of operation. Are we graduates in the Be Calm education? We went on exploring on the idea and slowly derived with the simple formula to deal with our emotional stuff and intellectual stuff at the same time.
Understanding Be Calm
Dr Hegde described Be Calm as an important idea made of five simple practices. These practices shape the doctor of the future.
B stands for Be Present
- In a busy hospital, the best gift a doctor can offer is full attention and timely intervention. To Be Present is to see the human being before looking at the medical chart. Many dimensions further. Can we be present here and now? We can build it with practice.
C stands for Compassionate Anchor
- Medicine deals with people at their most vulnerable moments. It is important a doctor, for that matter, every person to grow with the compassionate posture and presence. Dr Hegde reminded the Be Calm graduates that knowledge without compassion can do more harm than good. A doctor must remain a compassionate presence in the middle of the patient’s fear and confusion.
A stand for Adaptable Listener
- The first step in diagnosis is listening. A good doctor does not only hear symptoms. They also understand unspoken fears, social situations, and family concerns. This kind of listening requires patience and flexibility. Non-Verbal, I should add here.
L stands for Lifelong Learner of Humanity
- Doctors are expected to continue learning about science. Be Calm adds another dimension. A doctor must also keep learning about people, values, empathy and communication. The most complex system a doctor will ever deal with is the human being.
M stands for Mindful Practitioner
- In stressful and urgent settings, a calm mind is the greatest strength. Mindfulness helps a doctor stay balanced, make clear decisions, prevent burnout, and protect patient safety.
Why Be Calm Matters Today
Dr Hegde’s message comes at an important moment. Modern hospitals are full of advanced machines and artificial intelligence. These tools can suggest diagnoses and treatment plans, but they cannot replace human connection. A doctor trained in Be Calm can guide a patient through fear, uncertainty and pain in a way no device can.

Hospitals are often places filled with anxiety. A calm and composed doctor helps create a healing environment simply by being present. Their voice, their patience and their confidence can lower stress and bring comfort even before treatment begins.
The Lasting Value of a Be Calm Graduate
The Be Calm message from Dr Hegde changes the way we think about what it means to be a healer. The degree on the wall shows academic achievement. The Be Calm mindset shows character, compassion and commitment. It builds trust, encourages honest conversations, and often leads to better healing. As new doctors step into their careers, they carry more than medical knowledge. They carry a promise. They are called to become the calm in moments of crisis, the clarity when things are confusing, and the human touch within scientific care.
Dr Ashok Hegde’s idea of Be Calm is a memorable line. It is a strong and lasting guide for the future of healing. Let us all Be Calm and Compassionate. Let us heal each other and enhance our worth.
