Attorney General Addresses Technology and Law at SDM Law College’s Golden Jubilee
Mangaluru, December 16: The Alumni Meet and the 11th Silver Jubilee Endowment Lecture were held on the second day (December 15) of the two-day Golden Jubilee Celebrations (Suvarna Patha) of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) Law College, Mangalore.
The events took place at TMA Pai International Convention Centre.
Dr. R. Venkataramani, Attorney General of India, delivered the Silver Jubilee Endowment Lecture. He spoke about how technology is replacing manpower and highlighted the limitations of relying solely on technology for decision-making.
Dr. Venkataramani praised Dr. Veerendra Heggade’s vision to establish a law college. He emphasized the connection between Dharmasthala and the concept of Dharma, which he said played a key role in the college’s successful 50-year journey.
Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, President of the SDM Educational Society, noted that earlier, studying law was considered a last option. However, this has changed due to the quality of education now being provided.
He stressed the importance of taking the study of law seriously to achieve success and contribute to society. He also highlighted the benefits of the five-year law course over the three-year course, stating that it leads to better learning outcomes.
Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, in a written message read during the event, credited SDM Law College for his success. He mentioned that, despite being a backbencher, he became Speaker of the Assembly thanks to the education he received at the college. He described advocacy as a profession with great social responsibility, calling advocates ambassadors of the Indian Constitution.
Felicitation Ceremony
Guests of honour included Additional Advocate General of Karnataka Shahul Hameed Rahman, Former Principal Prof. A. Rajendra Shetty, Retired Kerala High Court Judge Antony Dominic, Retired Karnataka High Court Judge Michael D’Cunha, Retired IAS Officer Sham Bhat, and Symbiosis Law School Director Dr. Shashikala Gurupur. They were all felicitated during the event.
Dr. Devraj K., President of the Alumni Association, gave an overview of the association’s activities. A special Golden Jubilee edition titled ‘Sustainability and Consumer Protection’ was released.
Other dignitaries present included SDME Society Secretary Dr. Satheeshchandra S., PTA President Purushothama Bhat, Mangalore Bar Association President and alumnus H. V. Raghavendra Rao, Advisor and alumnus Dinakar Shetty, and Cultural Coordinator and alumna Soujanya Hegde. Presidents of alumni chapters and bar associations from Kerala, Puttur, Moodubidire, and Kasargod were also in attendance.
The college Principal, Dr. Tharanatha, and Alumni Association staff coordinators Maheshchandra Nayak and Santhosh Kumar also participated in the event.
Vice President of the Alumni Association, Uday Prakash Muliya, welcomed the guests, while Secretary Sathish B. K. delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Assistant Professors Meghna R. Anand and Amith S. M.
The celebrations concluded with cultural performances.
