Speech by Mr. GN Girish Vice President, The Ocean Pearl Hotels

Good evening and a very warm welcome to everyone present. Thank you so much for joining us today for this cake mixing ceremony. We hold this event annually at The Ocean Pearl because we love being a part of celebrations happening all around us. If there’s a reason to celebrate life anywhere in the world, my team is always ready to create something special for every occasion.

As many of you are familiar with the cake mixing ceremony and its history, it originated in Europe in the 17th century. During the harvest season, an abundance of fruits and dry fruits would be harvested and used to create the delicious plum cake. Now, you might wonder why we add alcohol. Well, as the saying goes, life needs a spirit. For the cake to last for several months, acting as a preservative, alcohol plays a crucial role. It not only provides a kick but also takes care of the technical aspects of cake mixing.

At The Ocean Pearl, the Christmas season is the perfect time for creativity. When we engage in this cake mixing ceremony, the spirit of Christmas permeates through society. The anticipation of Christmas celebrations starts right from the day we mix the cake. So, my team and the kitchen have a significant task ahead until the 31st of December.

Every day, various types of cooking and preparations take place in the kitchen. To infuse the kitchen with great energy, we commence with this cake mixing ceremony. The same cake that we mix today will be prepared, baked, and delivered to all of you after 20 days. What you mix today will embody the spirit and sweetness that each one of you brings to this gathering.

Beyond today, on the 23rd, 24th, and 25th, my team will spread the Christmas cheer across Mangalore with a chariot, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Christmas. On the 24th, we’ll host a brunch and a candlelight dinner. Then, on the 25th, a lavish buffet with turkey, sweets, and European dishes prepared by my team will be served. For this Christmas season, these special delicacies are our way of spreading joy.

I appreciate all of you for being here today to bless my team. Your presence provides them with the special energy needed to do a wonderful job throughout the month of December. If you want to experience genuine, heartfelt Christmas celebrations in Mangalore, I invite all of you to visit The Ocean Pearl during the Christmas season. You will feel like you are in Europe and in Mangalore simultaneously.

At The Ocean Pearl, we celebrate every festival—Diwali, Ramzan, Christmas—with the aim of celebrating life and spreading love. Thank you all for attending this cake mixing ceremony. Once the cake is ready, we will certainly send it to all your residences. Now, let’s continue the festive spirit with a small high tea that we have organized. I hope you all enjoy it. Thank you very much!

The Joyful Tradition of Cake Mixing Ceremonies: Sweet Celebrations

The cake mixing ceremony is a delightful and symbolic celebration of joyous occasions. Rooted in history and laden with tradition, this ceremony has become a popular and cherished custom, especially in the context of weddings and festive seasons.  The cake mixing ceremony has its roots in European traditions, where the act of mixing ingredients for a Christmas fruitcake was considered a communal and joyful event. Over time, this practice evolved and found its way into various cultures and celebrations, gaining popularity for its festive and social nature.

Cake mixing ceremonies are often associated with the notion of prosperity and good luck. The ingredients used in the mixing process, including dried fruits, nuts, and spices, are believed to bring abundance and happiness to the upcoming celebration.

The ceremony provides an opportunity for friends and family to come together and actively participate in the preparations for the upcoming event. The shared experience fosters a sense of community and strengthens bonds among the participants.

Cake mixing is not merely a culinary task; it’s a celebration in itself. The excitement of combining various ingredients and the aromatic blend of spices create an atmosphere of anticipation and joy, setting the stage for the festivities to come.

Typically conducted a few weeks or months before the main event, the cake mixing ceremony involves a gathering of individuals who actively participate in the process of combining the ingredients. The ingredients, often comprising dried fruits, nuts, spices, and liquor, are meticulously mixed and soaked. Participants, dressed in festive attire, use their hands or utensils to blend the ingredients, infusing the mixture with the essence of celebration.

The cake mixing ceremony serves as a joyful and meaningful celebration, infusing the air with the spirit of festivity. As a tradition that transcends cultural boundaries, it has become a cherished practice that not only symbolizes good fortune but also creates lasting memories for those involved. So, the next time you witness or participate in a cake mixing ceremony, savor the moment and relish the anticipation of the sweet celebrations that lie ahead.
