Mangalore, October 3, 2024: A grand ceremony marked the culmination of 15 days of tireless work by National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers from four universities – Mangalore University, Nitte University, Yenepoya University, and Rajiv Gandhi University.
Dignitaries attended the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar program, including Dr. M. Vijaykumar (Vice Chancellor, Yenepoya University), S.K. Pandey (Under Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports), Paul (Chairman, Global TV), and Sh. Ramachandra Mijar (Chief Editor, Udayavaani Daily). Ashok Kumar Dash, State Director, NYKS, karnataka, Banguluru and Rajesh Karanth Asst. Director of NYKS State Office, karnataka. were Special Guests. NSS Coordinators from three universities Dr. Sheshappa Amin, Mangalore University, Shashi Kumar Shetty, Nitte University, Dr. Ashwini Shetty, Yenepoya University took lead of the entire program. Program Officers and NSS Volunteers actively participated the event.
Appreciation from Government Official
S.K. Pandey, Under-Secretary from the Government of India, New Delhi, traveled to Mangalore to witness the NSS activities and expressed appreciation for the outstanding work done by the volunteers.
Chief Guest Address
Dr. Vijayakumar, Vice Chancellor, delivered the chief guest address, praising the NSS volunteers for their dedication and hard work in completing various community service projects.
Community Outreach Programs
Dr. Vijayakumar highlighted the university’s notable initiatives, particularly the Cancer Awareness Outreach Program launched nine years ago. Leveraging the well-established NSS program at Yenepoya University, Dr. Vijayakumar collaborated with Mangalore University’s NSS team, led by Dr. Vineetha Rai, Then NSS Co ordinator of Mangalore University and the Vice Chancellor Dr. Subramanya Yadapadithaya. Together, they successfully implemented the program across three districts: Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and Udupi.
This initiative trained 13,500 volunteers and 135 program officers, promoting cancer awareness and early detection. Additionally, Dr. Vijayakumar mentioned the ongoing project to detect non-communicable diseases among tribal populations, covering five districts and 50,000 people.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of human values, social skills, and emotional intelligence in addition to academic qualifications.

Dr. Vijayakumar acknowledged the support of the Government of Karnataka and dignitaries, including the Regional Director from Bangalore.
