These profound words by St. Vincent de Paul, the guiding spirit behind the Vincentians, epitomize the core philosophy of their mission. The Vincentians firmly believe that turning away from the suffering of others is like turning away from God.

A History Rooted in Compassion and Faith

The roots of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul trace back to a group of young university students in Paris in 1833. Witnessing the stark social inequality and injustice around them, they decided to take action, hoping to change the world.

This led to the formation of the first “Conference of Charity,” a group of friends eager to share their faith and put it into action. Guided and supported by a Daughter of Charity, Sister Rosalie Rendu, they learned about the teachings of Saint Vincent de Paul. In 1834, the Conferences adopted St. Vincent as their patron saint and dedicated themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Global Impact

Today, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is a global organization present in over 150 countries, with 800,000 members and 1,500,000 volunteers. Every day, they make a difference in the lives of over 30 million people. Their reach extends beyond national borders, as they are an associate member of UNESCO and a special adviser to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The Vincentians actively support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals proposed by the United Nations in its Agenda 2030.

Service and Solidarity

At the heart of the Vincentian mission is a commitment to serve those in need. They believe in working directly and closely with people who require assistance, understanding that through genuine listening and support, they can create bonds that address the whole person, not just their immediate material needs.

The event was inaugurated with great enthusiasm and featured notable speakers, HR professionals, industry experts, and academics from the region. Distinguished Chief Guest and His Insights

Mr. Unnikrishnan, the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner for Mangalore, graced the occasion as the esteemed Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, he expressed profound concerns about the rapidly evolving landscape of HR in the age of AI. Mr. Unnikrishnan referenced visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has emphasized the remarkable capabilities of AI in potentially outsmarting even the most intelligent humans. In a grand spectacle of creativity and unity, the School of Social Work at Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, commenced a two-day National Level Inter-Collegiate Talent Hunt, “EXPRESSIONS 2023,” today, with the theme “EMPORIA – The Battle of the Empires.” This event seeks to celebrate creativity, playfulness, and integrity while fostering personal growth and development.

The event began with a warm welcome from Mrs. Vineetha K, the Registrar of Evaluation, who set the stage for an exciting array of events that followed. The inauguration was a notable moment, graced by Sri Anupam Agrawal, IPS, Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police, who unveiled a scroll carrying the theme of “EMPORIA.”

Commissioner Agrawal, initially taken aback by the theme, commended its positive perspective on battles and their role in cultivating growth and development among participants. He encouraged students to partake in competitions to enhance their skills and personal development and extended his best wishes to all the participants.

In his motivational address, Commissioner Agrawal challenged the traditional notion of life as a competitive race and instead championed collective progress, emphasizing the importance of working together to ensure success for all. His words resonated deeply with the audience, leaving them inspired.

The program was presided over by Dr. Jenis Mary P, Vice Principal of the School of Social Work, who expressed her gratitude for the dedicated volunteers and staff whose tireless efforts made the event possible. These competitions included “Battle of Acts” (a literature event), “Battle of The August” (an all-rounder event), “Battle of Barters” (a best management team event), “Battle of Beagles” (a mystery-solving event), “Battle of Brushstrokes” (an art event), “Battle of Flavours” (a cooking event), “Battle of Frames” (a reel-making event), “Battle of Hunters” (a treasure hunt), and “Battle of Showstoppers” (a variety and dance event). The palpable enthusiasm among the students was evident as they actively engaged in these diverse challenges, showcasing their talents and creativity.

CA Nandagopal Shenoy , President of World Konkani Centre and Sahitya Akademi awardee Gokuldas Prabhu will be the Vice presidents. Konkani poet and thinker Titus Noronha will be the general secretary and journalist H. M. Pernal will be the working president of the reception committee.

25th All India Konkani Sahitya Sammelan will be held at Basti Vaman Shenoy Stage in the premises of World Konkani Centre on Nov 4 & 5. About 650 delegates from various parts of India expected to attend the Sammelan, which Mangalore is hosting for the first time in the 84 years history of All India Konkani Parishad, founded in 1939 by Late Madhav Manjunath Shanbaug of Kumta.

Abu Dhabi based NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael D’Souza originally hails from Puttur and is a constant supporter for Konkani activities and programmes in India and abroad. With his signature programme ‘Vision Konkani’ he has empowered Konkani writers and Artists with Konkani Book Publication Grant to the tune of Rs.40 Lakhs, Konkani Music Grant to the tune of Rs.10 Lakh and Konkani Feature Film Grant to the tune of Rs. 25 Lakh. Publication of Konkani books, Production of Music Singles, and Feature film are under process under his visionary programme VISION KONKANI. He has established EDU CARE scholarship programme for konkani speaking students for higher education under the supervision of CODP, Dioceses of Mangalore. So far 3,500 students benefited from this scholarship programme.

Various sub Committees were formed in the recently held preliminary meeting under the guidance of Sahitya Akademi Executive Council Member and convenor of Konkani Advisory Board at Sahitya Akademi, Poet Melvyn Rodrigues, Chetan Acharya, Executive President of All India Konkani Parishad and Konkani educationist Dr Kasturi Mohan Pai at Nalanda English Medium School, V T Road. Mangalore.

Stephen Pinto, Bendur and Oswald Rodrigues, Bejai will be heading the Finance Committee, World Konkani Centre will be looking after Food and Venue, Smt Suchitra S Shenoy and Smt Felcy Lobo will be leading the Front Office and Volunteer Committee, Accommodation and transport will he managed by Vincent Pinto Anjelore, Floyd Kiran Moras, Nirkan and Gerald Concesso. Dr Hanumanth Chopdekar and Dr Jayanti Naik are in charge of the Programme Committee and Smt Anwesha Singbhal will be heading the stage committee. The Media promotion Committee will be handled by Stany Bela and Praveen Tauro. Titus Noronha will be in charge of the Printing and Souvenir committee.

The National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM) Mangalore Chapter, in collaboration with Deloitte Bengaluru, is organizing an HR Summit on November 4th, 2023, at Hotel Ocean Pearl in Mangaluru. The theme of the summit is “Navigating the Future of HR in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Organisational Excellence.”

The summit aims to equip HR professionals with the knowledge and tools they need to excel in the rapidly evolving business context. With AI becoming an integral part of HR practices, understanding its nuances and potential is paramount.
