We had the privilege of knowing each other for a long time, and I can confidently say that he embodied the spirit of a true journalist.
Guruvappa Balepuni was an upright journalist who stood by his principles, never compromising on the truth. His commitment to ethical journalism was unwavering. His dedication to responsible reporting was tremendous. One of the most striking aspects of Guruvappa Balepuni’s personality was his simplicity. He lived a modest life, unassuming and unpretentious.
He never chased wealth or recognition, content instead to focus on the work that truly mattered to him. In a world where material success is often seen as the ultimate goal, Guruvappa N.T. Balepuni’s humility and lack of pretension were a refreshing change. His passion for journalism was evident in everything he did.
He believed in the power of journalism to bring about positive change, and he dedicated his career to promoting the causes that he cared about. Whether it was advocating for social justice, or community development, Guruvappa Balepuni’s reporting was always informed by a deep sense of empathy and compassion.
What set him apart from many of his colleagues was his willingness to get involved in the causes he was promoting. He was the first Kannada journalist to receive the Sarojini Naidu Prize, a national-level award for his reporting on women and panchayat raj. He also received state-level award for his reporting on rural development issues.
Guruvappa Balepuni was honoured with the Dakshina Kannada Rajyotsava Award, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Prashasti, and Karnataka Media Academy Prashasti, among others. His reporting was widely acclaimed.
His commitment to journalism was not limited to his reporting. He was also an active participant in various initiatives aimed at promoting rural development and social justice. He worked closely with the district administration to promote the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and was a vocal advocate for the rights of marginalized communities.
