Mangaluru: A significant milestone in Karnataka’s sports history was marked with the launch of the Coastal Karnataka Sailing Club (CKSC), a non-profit foundation dedicated to the Olympic sport of sailing. Situated at ‘Wonder splash Adventures’ near the Kuloor Bridge, this ambitious initiative promises to chart a new course for the sport in the region. Founded by a group of passionate sailing enthusiasts, CKSC envisions a transformative journey for the coastal region, aiming to foster a vibrant sailing culture and establish Karnataka as a global sailing powerhouse.
A Bold Vision for Sailing Excellence
With the powerful motto “Sailing Excellence,” CKSC is driven by a mission to make sailing accessible to individuals from all walks of life. Maj. Gen. Devaia, President of CKSC, emphasized the club’s goal to inspire and empower local communities to embrace the sport. “We aim to create a sailing culture in Karnataka, starting here in the coastal region. Our mission is not just to promote sailing as a sport but also to build life skills, confidence, and a spirit of adventure among the youth,” he said.
World-Class Training for Aspiring Sailors
CKSC boasts an impressive team of Yachting Association of India (YAI) qualified instructors, ensuring that participants receive professional training. The club has invested in Optimist Class boats, designed for children aged 8-15, as well as larger boats for older participants. This setup ensures that sailors of all ages and experience levels can embark on their journey with confidence.
Dreaming Big: National and International Competitions
CKSC’s vision extends far beyond recreational sailing. The club is laying the groundwork to train young sailors to compete in prestigious national and international competitions. A key part of this roadmap involves preparing youth for entry into elite programs like the Karnataka Government Sports Hostel in Karwar and the Boys Sports Companies of the Indian Army and Navy.
The club’s immediate goal is to secure the Optimist Green Fleet title at the National Championship next year, while its long-term vision includes podium finishes at the Asian Games and Olympics. Through these efforts, CKSC aims to bring global recognition to Karnataka’s coastline and position the region as a hub of sailing talent.
Empowering NCC Cadets and Building Youth Confidence
CKSC is also collaborating with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) to train cadets for the All India Yachting Regatta, one of the most prestigious events in the NCC calendar. Beyond competition, the club is committed to offering unique sailing programs that help young participants build confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills.
A Thrilling Sport and Life Skill
Sailing is more than just a sport; it is an exhilarating experience that combines physical strength, endurance, and mental toughness. A single 40 minute race can challenge athletes as much as running a marathon, making it one of the ultimate tests of human capability. At the same time, sailing offers moments of serenity, promoting happiness and calmness for those seeking a peaceful escape on the water.
As a veteran sailor and Army officer remarked during the club’s launch, “Sailing teaches invaluable lessons in strategy, teamwork, and resilience. It’s a transformative experience that helps individuals discover their true potential and push their limits.”
Building a Thriving Ecosystem for Sailing
CKSC plans to acquire additional boats to enable larger participation, with beginners starting their training in the river and transitioning to sea sailing later. To expand the sport’s reach, the club aims to establish branches across Karnataka, making the state a significant destination for sailing enthusiasts and tourists alike.
The club has also enlisted the support of CREDAI’s President, MR. VINOD PINTO who has pledged to spread awareness about CKSC’s mission and inspire a new generation of sailors. Partnerships with local organizations and businesses will play a pivotal role in building a thriving ecosystem. Dynamic sponsorship opportunities, such as title sponsorships and boat branding, have been unveiled to attract support and resources.
An Inspiring Call to Action
CKSC’s aspirations were on full display during the Meet and Greet event held on 4th December 2024 at the CREDAI Office, Empire Mall, Mangalore. Veteran sailors Mahesh Kamath, Henry Britto, and Ramesh Rao; pillars of the sailing community; pledged their mentorship and support, inspiring young sailors to dream big.
The club also announced the highly anticipated Mangalore Regatta, scheduled for 15th January 2025, which promises to be a landmark event in Karnataka’s sailing calendar.
Join the Movement
CKSC invites individuals, families, and businesses to join this exciting journey. Details about membership and sailing programs will soon be available on the club’s website and social media channels.
