Mangaluru: In a heartwarming example of community support and social responsibility, a long standing but dilapidated cobbler shop near St. Agnes College has been replaced with a sturdy, waterproof metal structure, ensuring a secure livelihood for its owner, Ambika.

The newly constructed shop was inaugurated last week by Karnataka State MLA Shri VedaVyas Kamath. The ribbon cutting ceremony was carried out by Eric Dsouza and Prakash Pinto, marking the official opening of the upgraded facility for customers.

The cobbler shop, located at the St. Agnes College bus stop, has been serving the local community for nearly 50 years. Originally established by Ambika’s late husband, the shop had, over time, deteriorated significantly due to wear and tear and heavy monsoons. The wooden structure had become unsafe, with severe leakages and frequent rat infestations damaging tools and materials.

After her husband’s passing, Ambika, previously a homemaker, took on the responsibility of running the shop to support her three daughters, including her eldest who is currently studying at St. Agnes College. Despite having no prior experience, she learned the trade out of necessity to sustain her family.

Recognizing her struggle, Frederick Paul initiated efforts to rebuild the shop with an initial donation. He was soon joined by Eric Dsouza, a member of the Lion’s Club Valencia and Advisory Board Member of Saanidhya Group of Institutions for Mentally Challenged Children. Together, they mobilized additional contributions from Prakash Pinto, Dsouza himself, and an anonymous donor to fund the project.

Completed at a cost of ₹45,000, the new metal structure is designed to be durable, weather resistant, and long lasting. In addition to the shop, new cobbler tools were also provided to replace those damaged over the years.

The inauguration brought immense joy to Ambika, who expressed relief and gratitude, knowing that her livelihood is now secure. The improved working conditions are expected to provide her with a stable income, ensuring a brighter future for her daughters.

This initiative stands as a shining example of compassion and collective effort, highlighting how community driven actions can transform lives. Well wishers have been encouraged to support Ambika further by patronizing her shop.

This story reflects the power of social concern and community unity in uplifting lives.
