St Aloysius University | Students Must Dream Big and Serve Society: Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ | Global TV

Kreeda Spoorthi & Vidwath Spoorthi Award Ceremony 2025–26 | Award Ceremony

Mangaluru, Sept. 11:
At the Kreeda Spoorthi & Vidwath Spoorthi Award Ceremony 2025–26, held at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Vice-Chancellor Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ delivered an inspiring address urging students to move beyond personal achievement and embrace a deeper responsibility towards society, environment, and the nation’s future.

Standing for Society, Not Just Self

Fr Martis reminded students that true education is not confined to high marks or accolades, but lies in what they give back to society. He voiced concern about misleading information, lack of accountability, and negligence in governance, pointing out how ordinary people are left to suffer. “You stand for certain things in society, not just doing well in your studies and getting accolades, but doing something for society, because it is a concern of all of us,” he said.

Highlighting issues such as waste management in Mangaluru, he called upon students to take up active roles in civic responsibility, setting an example for others to follow.

Service Beyond Obligation

The Vice-Chancellor drew attention to initiatives like the Sahaya programme, where students commit to 40 hours of community service. He praised those who went beyond the minimum requirement, completing up to 80 hours, and urged others to approach service not as a burden but as an opportunity for personal growth. Using the metaphor of an egg, he explained: “If broken from outside, there is no life; but if it breaks from within, there is growth and beauty.”

St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), Mangaluru, celebrated the remarkable achievements of its students and staff through the Student and Staff of the Month Awards for August 2025, honouring individuals who have gone beyond academics to inspire with their creativity, leadership, and dedication.

Yashashvi – Student of the Month

Yashashvi was recognised for her excellence in the field of performing arts. A talented dancer, choreographer, and creative artist, she has also made her mark as an outstanding performer of yoga. Her versatile contributions embody the Aloysian spirit of creativity, discipline, and holistic growth.

Hithesh P – Student of the Month

Hithesh P earned recognition for his superior level of acumen as a creative artist. He showcased his talent by working as an Assistant Director in the popular movie “SU from SO”. His achievement reflects the growing engagement of Aloysians in the world of media and entertainment, carrying the university’s motto, “Lucet et Ardet – Shine to Enkindle”, into new creative fields.

Ms. Bhavya Shetty – Staff of the Month

The Staff of the Month award was presented to Ms. Bhavya Shetty, whose extraordinary skills of leadership and teamwork shone brightly as she coordinated the Aloysian Fest 2025. Alongside her organisational excellence, she continues to inspire students as a theatre artist and mentor.

Rai Deepak Shetty – Aloysian Alumnus of the Month (August 2025)

Rai Deepak Shetty earned recognition for demonstrating a higher level of acumen in the field of performing arts. He showcased his talent by playing major roles in South Indian movies and receiving widespread accolades. His achievement as an eminent alumnus and ambassador of the values of his alma mater reflects the growing engagement of Aloysians in the world of media and entertainment, carrying the university’s motto, “Lucet et Ardet – Shine to Enkindle”, into new creative fields.

A Culture of Recognition

These awards, presented under the leadership of Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Vice-Chancellor, highlight the university’s commitment to recognising not just academic excellence, but also creativity, leadership, and service. The recipients’ contributions stand as a testimony to the Aloysian ethos of nurturing well-rounded individuals who enrich society with their talents.

Environmental and Social Concerns

Addressing the ecological crisis, Fr Martis underlined that the problem is not population but unchecked greed and the unequal distribution of wealth. With a small percentage of people holding most of the nation’s resources, he stressed the need for students—“intellectuals with high percentage”—to question such inequality and work towards a just world.

He linked this responsibility with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) of the Jesuits, both of which provide a roadmap for building a fair, sustainable, and harmonious society.

Dreams of Excellence in Sports

While recognizing merit and sports scholarship recipients, Fr Martis encouraged students to set higher goals in athletics. Referring to the university’s Olympic-standard swimming pool, he said St Aloysius students must aim to reach national and international platforms, even dreaming of producing Olympians in the near future.

A Call to Dream and Transform

Concluding his address, the Vice-Chancellor urged students to cultivate big dreams, determination, and single-minded devotion. He expressed hope that their time at St Aloysius would shape them not just into achievers, but into compassionate leaders committed to service.

“Your dream begins now, your desire begins here,” he told the students, blessing them with success in academics, sports, and above all, in their contribution to society.

Dr. Errol Pinto was the Chief Guest. Dr Alwyn D’sa, Registrar, Dr Ronald Nazareth, Registrar, Fr Vishwas Misquith SJ, Finance Officer, and Ms. Shanti Pinto, PRO were present in the event along with other guests, faculty and students.

The Rachana Professional Award 2023 to 2025 | a shining recognition for John Richard Lobo | The Administrator Turned Changemaker | Global TV

The Rachana Professional Award 2023 to 2025 is a shining recognition of John Richard Lobo. His life is defined not by the arrogance of power but by a relentless commitment to public service, sustainable development, and community transformation. A distinguished officer of the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) and later an elected legislator, J R Lobo embodies the rare combination of administrative expertise, visionary leadership, and people first politics.

From Administrator to Changemaker

For more than three decades, J R Lobo served within the corridors of governance, mastering the art of administration as a decorated KAS officer. His tenure was marked by innovation and foresight, earning him the President of India Medal for his role as National Census Officer. Yet, his most defining contribution came when he chose to step beyond bureaucracy. By entering politics, he transformed from an impartial administrator into a grassroots changemaker, carrying his knowledge of the system directly to the people. His election as MLA for Mangalore South in 2013 symbolized this transition and proved that true leadership bridges governance with empathy.

A Vision for a Green and Golden Mangaluru

In a political climate often driven by noise and conspiracies, J R Lobo represents quiet conviction and dedicated services. His philosophy, which he calls Integrated Regional Development, envisions cities and their countrysides growing together in harmony. He refuses to see urban prosperity and rural vitality as competing forces; to him, they are two halves of the same whole.

This philosophy came alive most prominently in his crowning achievement, Pilikula Nisargadhama. Pilikula was once an almost abandoned land, distanced from developments. J R Lobo reimagined Pilikula as a 350 acre eco tourism and knowledge hub. Under his stewardship as Commissioner of the Mangalore City Corporation from 1999 to 2003, Pilikula grew into a symbol of balanced progress:

  • The Green Lungs: a biological park, arboretum, and ecosystem preservation for the Western Ghats
  • The Golden Opportunity: livelihoods and local tourism that empowered rural families
  • The Learning Centre: a science hub, heritage village, and art gallery nurturing knowledge and culture

Pilikula is a living manifesto of Lobo’s vision, development with a soul.

Simplicity as Strength

Despite his towering achievements, J R Lobo remains a man of disarming simplicity. His accessibility is legendary: a leader who could be found sharing tea in local shops, listening more than speaking. Constituents trusted him because his projects carried no shadow of personal gain. His lifestyle, free of egos, gave credibility to his grand visions.

A Life Rooted in Service

Born to teachers Albert and Cecilia Lobo, he grew up with values of knowledge and humility. After his early education and a Bachelor of Science from St. Philomena College, Puttur, he secured top rank in the KAS examination of 1977. His 36 year career spanned roles such as Tahsildar, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, Additional District Magistrate, and finally, Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, where he laid modern concrete roads and championed civic renewal.

After taking VRS in 2011, he carried his passion for service into politics, holding key roles like Chairman of the House Committee for Backward Classes and Minorities and Vice Chairman of the Christian Development Council. His initiatives like the Plastic Hekkiko campaign reflect his practical approach to community betterment.

Beyond Bureaucracy and Politics

J R Lobo’s impact extends into entrepreneurship. He founded CILA Advertising, co founded Albertsons International (a banking security firm), and now leads agro ventures such as Cocoa Rich Agri LLP (a leading cocoa exporter) and Whitegrove Agri LLP (innovative vertical mushroom farming).

The Legacy of Balance

What sets J R Lobo apart is his ability to balance vision with humility, progress with preservation, and governance with accessibility. His life’s work, from transforming Pilikula into a world class model of sustainable growth to building trust as a people’s MLA, underscores a simple truth: leadership is not about power but about service. As Dakshina Kannada looks toward the future, the legacy of J R Lobo endures. It is a green and golden Mangaluru, where dreams are bold and rooted in the everyday lives of its people. J R Lobo is a far better choice to lead the constituency.

He sees interconnected systems; social, economic, and environmental, and understands how to recalibrate them for the greater good. His authorship is a key to this vision, sharing ideas that challenge the status quo and inspire others to see what is possible. He is a social architect, drafting blueprints for a more equitable and compassionate society, and then meticulously working to bring those plans to life, brick by brick, community by community.

The Guardian’s Pact: Concern for Humanity, and for Nature Itself
What truly sets a paradigm-shifter apart is the breadth of their concern. Denny’s compassion extends far beyond the human sphere, embracing a holistic vision that includes the very environment we inhabit. His is a voice that recognizes the inextricable link between human welfare and planetary health. This concern for nature and the environment is not an add-on to his mission; it is a fundamental part of it. He advocates for a world where progress is not achieved at the expense of our planet, understanding that stewardship of the Earth is the ultimate act of social responsibility for future generations.

Denny Thomas Vattakunnel is a remarkable synthesis of thought and action, of heart and mind, of urgency for change and the patience to do it right. He embodies the principle that to win the race for a better world, one must be swift in compassion and steady in purpose. NV Paulose, Chairman, Global TV +91 98441 82044

Every community is blessed with natural wealth, though often it goes unnoticed. The fertile soil, the crops, the skills of people, and even traditional wisdom; all of these are resources waiting to be recognized and used. True prosperity begins when individuals learn to value what is already around them and transform it into something meaningful. Rather than chasing distant dreams, great change happens when people look within their own environment and nurture the hidden treasures lying close to home.

In Kerala, one such treasure has been the cocoa plant. For decades, it grew abundantly in the land, tended lovingly by farming families. What began as a crop destined for trade soon turned into a symbol of possibility and creativity. When combined with vision, patience, and dedication, this resource evolved into a journey of taste, tradition, and entrepreneurship; leading to the creation of Cocoa Rich Chocolates.

Cocoa Rich’s story stretches back over 50 years, embedded in the lush landscapes of Kalady, Kerala, where cocoa was woven into the fabric of life. This legacy gave rise to a generation steeped in the rhythms of farming and trade. However, it was Renjan Jose, who felt a calling to transform this heritage into something brilliant and amazing. Instead of just supplying cocoa at a throw away price, he created it into an astonishing brand expanding farming into farm tourism and industrial transformation.

From Setbacks to Visionary Beginnings

The dream of creating a chocolate brand was born through trials. For Renjan, the early steps were marked by disappointment with broken promises from partners, financial struggles, and even betrayal by those he trusted. At times, the vision of building something unique seemed like it would collapse before it could even take shape. Yet, instead of bowing to despair, he chose to let every hardship sharpen his determination. Each obstacle became a reminder that his mission was bigger than temporary setbacks.

By 2014, the lessons of struggle had forged unshakable commitment. With a fire lit by both passion and persistence, Renjan launched Cocoa Rich Chocolates as a brand rooted in authenticity. He envisioned a journey that would honor the bean from its roots, crafting chocolate entirely in house with artisanal integrity. What others saw as risky, he saw as liberating, bringing out the real essence of chocolate guided by honesty and infused with soul. Cocoa Rich was born in the thrill of rising stronger from every fall.

There were moments when it seemed easier to give up, to return to the safe comfort of farming alone. But every sleepless night, surrounded by the aroma of raw cocoa beans from his family’s land, reminded him that his story was not meant to end in defeat. The turning point came one quiet evening when, after yet another setback, Renjan roasted a batch of cocoa beans by himself just to see what would happen. As the beans cracked open and the rich nutty fragrance filled the air, something awakened in him. This was no longer about proving others wrong, it was about proving the bean’s true worth.

From that moment, he decided that if no one else would walk beside him, he would walk the path alone with honesty as his guide. In 2014, he gave life to Cocoa Rich Chocolates, a venture born from fire, both literal and symbolic: fire that roasted his first beans, and fire that transformed struggle into a bold authentic dream.

Mastering the Chocolate Journey: Art, Science, and Soul

Cocoa Rich merges deep-rooted passion with technical expertise. Every step; right from the handpicked cocoa beans to the final velvety chocolate, is a choreography between craft and carefully honed technique; it’s All About the Bean. The cacao journey begins at the root. Sourcing directly from farms in Adimali, Mangua, and Murikkassery regions celebrated for their farmer communities; Cocoa Rich nurtures relationships built on trust, eliminating middlemen and ensuring fair compensation for farmers.

An Immersive, Ritualistic Philosophy

Cocoa Rich’s philosophy of chocolate making is built on intention and mindfulness. At its heart lies a deep respect for the cocoa bean, honouring it from cultivation to creation. Every step is guided by the belief that chocolate is not just a product but an experience of presence. What might appear to be a simple routine becomes a calming ritual, infused with sensory richness.

For Cocoa Rich, beauty is not only seen on the outside but also felt within, as chocolate becomes nourishment for both body and spirit. This vision is rooted in nature itself, trusting the restorative power of earth-grown ingredients and the timeless craftsmanship that brings them to life. Each bar thus becomes more than a confection; it is an invitation to slow down, reflect, and savour a ritual that connects people with nature and with themselves.
