The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi will find a powerful voice in Kozhikode this Friday as noted author and great-grandson of the Mahatma, Tushar Gandhi, joins an illustrious panel at a day-long History Seminar hosted by the District Congress Committee (DCC), Kozhikode. The seminar, which begins at 10:00 AM on April 25, 2025, will be held at the newly inaugurated K. Karunakaran Memorial Building, also known as the Loader K. Karunakaran Mandiram, in the Oommen Chandy Auditorium. Entrance is free, and the event is open to the public.

Tushar Gandhi will also be inaugurating the Gandhi Study Circle, a new research initiative launched by the District Congress Committee, Kozhikode. The study circle is envisioned as a platform to promote in-depth exploration of Gandhian values, socio-political thought, and their relevance in contemporary India. It aims to encourage academic engagement, dialogue, and youth involvement in the preservation and application of Gandhian philosophy.

Joining Tushar Gandhi on the panel are several prominent figures from Kerala’s socio-political and academic landscape, including:

Snehalaya De Addiction Centre, in collaboration with Janamaithri Police Station Manjeshwar and Police Officers Association Kasaragod District, organized a street play at Uppala and Hosangadi Bus Stand to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle. The program featured skits and mime shows performed by the Snehalaya team and MSW field work students from Mangalore University.

The event was attended by notable officials, including Mr. P Balakrishna Nair, ASP Kasaragod District; Ajith Kumar, CI Hosadurg Police station; Mr. Anoop, CI Manjeshwar; and Mr. Joseph Crasta, Executive Director of Snehalaya De Addiction Centre. The initiative aimed to educate the public, especially youth and parents, about the risks associated with substance abuse and encourage them to make informed choices.

During the program, police officers highlighted the lack of facilities for victims of substance abuse for treatment in the Kasaragod district and praised Snehalaya’s 15-year-long service to the Society. They commended Joseph Crasta and Snehalaya’s mission, particularly their recently established well-equipped De-addiction center for victims. The Executive Director of Snehalaya emphasized the dangers of drug abuse and the treatment options available at their center.

The event will be inaugurated by Rev. Dr. H. M. Watson, Secretary of Karnataka Christian Educational Society (KACES), a respected figure known for his visionary leadership in technical and vocational education. His presence will symbolize the legacy and forward momentum of HTTI’s mission to serve society through skill-based education.

The valedictory function will be held on the final day of the Marathon, graced by esteemed dignitaries. The Chief Guests for the occasion will be Dr. P. P. The Bank recorded an exceptional Gross Profit of INR 13.00 Crore for the fiscal year, consistently striving to reduce the Net NPA, and successfully decreasing it to 1.30% of the total advances. The bank is adequately maintaining the CRAR (Capital to Risk Assets Ratio), which stood at 22.81% as of 31st March 2025, well above the required level of 12.00% as per the Reserve Bank of India. The bank’s business turnover increased to Rs 1240 crore as of 31st March 2025.

When the breeze carried fragrance of temple flowers in the silent lanes of Chittoor and the sounds of Tabla echoed rhythms of a spiritual heart, from the Verandas of an old ancestral home, a poet was born to set rhythm for the merger of simplicity with spirituality. He was Chittoor Gopi who rose to the fame to remain grounded and well settled at the foothills of humility. His lyrics are profound to touch many hearts. It was made out of legendary feathers that are immensely distinct.

Chittoor Gopi draws poems with interlaced lyrics when others attempted to write them word by word. What it means by drawing instead of writing? You may ask this immediately to negate the idea or to navigate them through a logical level of understanding. You cannot find a synaptic gap between the words in his lyrics.

Every bit of his words gets merged with the entire set of poems as if all of them are immersed in the origin of oceans. It wasn’t a coincidence that brought Usha Uthup and Chittoor Gopi together; it was destiny. Didi, with her signature Kanjeevaram saree and booming voice, had already won hearts across the nation. But when she approached Gopi, asking, “Gopi, oru paattu ezhuthumo?”, she wasn’t merely requesting him for lyrics; she was inviting him to join her in the make of a new era in Malayalam music.

Their collaboration grew organically, with mutual respect and artistic understanding. Long before he became a lyricist of repute, Gopi was a passionate percussionist. As a young boy, he tapped rhythms on utensils, tables, and anything that made sound. His early mentor, renowned tabla artist K.C. Antony, recognized the spark and took him under his wing. Gopi soon found himself performing alongside the legends like Yesudas, Jayachandran, and Janaki Amma and others.

While cinema gave him a platform, Gopi never limited himself there. His work spans bhakti songs, educational songs, jingles, and public awareness campaigns. His writing reflects a blend of cultural rootedness and modern relevance, combining beauty with meaning. Perhaps the most touching aspect of his career is how he shaped Usha Uthup’s Malayalam repertoire.

Besides “Ente Keralam,” he penned hits like “Malabarin Oppana”, a song that gained new life with music by R.D. Burman. Each song they created together is a piece of history.
