Dr. Sharon Wilson | The Power of Roots: How Ancestry Strengthens Identity and Belonging | Global TV

Dr. Sharon Wilson’s decision in 2017 to bring her aging parents back to Kerala was fuelled by a need to reconnect | Global TV

NV Paulose, Chairman, Global TV +91 98441 82044

Dr. Sharon Wilson with Mr. Joy Thomas, Chief Editor, Global TV

Our roots are not just a part of our past; they are a living force that continues to shape our identity, values, and sense of belonging. Born and raised in Malaysia, yet deeply connected to her Malayalam ancestry, Dr. Wilson’s journey back to Kerala was more than a family visit; it was a homecoming, an awakening of a connection that transcends time and geography. Dr. Sharon Wilson tells us about the bright future for us when knowing that we are a globally spread community with strong foundations and roots. Be Connected to become strong and mighty could be her message shared in her bright smile and inspired conversation.

A Journey Back to the Past

Dr. Sharon Wilson’s decision in 2017 to bring her aging parents back to Kerala was fuelled by a need to reconnect; to understand the life her ancestors lived and to give her parents an opportunity to see their homeland once more. As she retraced the steps of her forebears, meeting long-lost relatives and visiting ancestral homes, she unearthed not just family history, but pieces of herself that had been hidden in distant memories and unspoken traditions.

One of the most touching moments of her journey was the discovery of letters exchanged between her grandfather and his siblings. These letters, preserved by a cousin, became bridges linking generations. The offered glimpses into the emotions, struggles, and aspirations of those who came before. In those handwritten words, Dr. Wilson found echoes of her own thoughts and values, reinforcing the idea that identity is not simply inherited, but actively lived and reaffirmed.

The Subtle Echoes of Ancestry

One Picture to Ignite Hundreds of Stories

Despite being raised thousands of miles away, Dr. Wilson found herself deeply familiar with Kerala’s cultural practices. From the way people communicated non-verbally to the instinctive knowledge of the local landscape, she was struck by the realization that her heritage was embedded in her very being. A simple banana plantation behind her grandfather’s house in Malaysia suddenly made sense when she saw similar ones across Kerala; it was not just a crop, but a symbol of continuity, a silent homage to the land her family once called home.

Even more striking was her sudden ease in speaking Malayalam, a language she had only passively absorbed growing up. As she walked through the streets of Cochin, she found herself conversing fluently, the words flowing effortlessly, as if they had always been there, waiting to be awakened.

Her brother’s words; “It’s in your blood”, connected with her very deeply and reaffirmed the idea that culture and language are deeply ingrained in our genetic and social makeup.

The Invisible Threads of Connection

My amachi and me on my wedding day in2004

Dr. Wilson’s experience speaks to a universal truth; ancestry is more than a lineage recorded on paper; it is a living force that subtly influences how we see the world, how we interact with people, and how we understand ourselves. Even in a foreign land, she could instinctively recognize fellow Malayalis, and they, in turn, recognized her. There was an unspoken bond, a shared cultural DNA that transcended borders and time.

Yet, she also acknowledged a challenge; many in the younger generations no longer feel the same pull towards their roots. In an era where modernity often overshadows tradition, the onus falls on those who remember to pass down these connections, to instil a sense of curiosity and pride in one’s heritage. Dr. Wilson took this responsibility to heart, sharing family photographs and stories in WhatsApp groups, hoping to ignite in her younger relatives the same longing to understand where they came from.

Why Roots Matter

My mother Mary VT Mathunni and me in 2018

The power of roots lies in their ability to anchor us. In a fast-changing world, they provide stability, a sense of identity, and an unshakeable confidence in who we are. Dr. Wilson’s journey back to Kerala was a nostalgic trip and a reaffirmation of her identity, an experience that brought clarity to her past and strength to her present. Understanding our ancestry is not about dwelling in the past; it is about embracing the forces that shaped us, about carrying forward the values and traditions that define us. Whether through language, customs, or familial bonds, our roots continue to guide us, offering a sense of belonging that no amount of distance can erase.

For those who have ever wondered about their origins, her experience serves as an inspiration and a call to explore, to reconnect, and to embrace the strength that comes from knowing exactly where you belong.

Dr. Sam Pitroda | International Conference at Mar Baselios Christian College of Engineering & Technology, Peerumedu | Global TV

The Future of AI and Social Media: Dr. Sam Pitroda’s Vision at MBC Peerumedu | Global TV

NV Paulose, Chairman, Global TV +91 98441 82044

Peermade, Kuttikkanam – February 20, 2025

Dr. Sam Pitroda, the legendary technologist and visionary, addressed the International Conference at Mar Baselios Christian College of Engineering & Technology, Peerumedu, with a compelling talk that touched upon the evolution of technology, the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI), and the transformative power of social media. Speaking from Chicago, he shared his six-decade-long journey through technological advancements, offering a deeply personal and insightful perspective on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

A Lifetime of Technological Evolution

Dr. Pitroda began by acknowledging the privilege of addressing a new generation at a time when AI and social media are reshaping the global landscape. He emphasized the need for today’s youth to be environmentally conscious and technologically prepared for an uncertain but opportunity-filled future.

Recollecting his own journey, he reminisced about his early years, born in 1942 in a small tribal village in Orissa, India. With parents who had only a fourth-grade education, he nurtured big dreams. Inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s vision of sending a man to the moon, he embarked on an arduous journey to America in 1964. Traveling by boat from Mumbai through Karachi, Aden, Egypt, and Europe before finally reaching Chicago, he arrived in a world on the cusp of an electronics revolution.

From Transistors to AI: A Front-Row Seat to Innovation

Dr. Pitroda recounted his first-hand experience witnessing the birth of the transistor in 1947 and how this tiny innovation led to semiconductors, integrated circuits, microprocessors, and eventually, AI processors. Holding a transistor in his hand for the first time was a moment of awe, marking the beginning of an era where billions of bits of data could be processed on a single chip.

The implications of this rapid advancement were profound. What started with basic computational ability evolved into the internet, social media, and now, artificial intelligence. He admitted that even the pioneers of technology had little idea of how the internet would evolve, let alone the massive influence social media would wield today.

The Power and Pitfalls of Social Media

In his analysis of social media, Dr. Pitroda explained its role in democratizing information and decentralizing power. He highlighted how platforms that started as simple tools for communication have transformed into global movements, connecting billions of people.

Social media fosters co-creation, empowers individuals, and enables new business models. He referenced the phenomenon of ‘demonetization of services,’ citing Uber as an example of how technology reduces costs and reshapes industries. Yet, he also warned of the unintended consequences. Anxiety, stress, and uncertainty about the future are rising among younger generations.

The world has changed rapidly, altering the way relationships are formed, businesses operate, and information is consumed. Social networks have redefined the concept of community, with individuals now forming global friendships based on shared interests in ecology, climate change, and social justice.

AI and the Future of Humanity

Dr. Pitroda’s most thought-provoking insights centered on AI. He described it as the next great frontier, akin to how the transistor once revolutionized computing. AI, he said, will fundamentally reshape the way we work, learn, and interact with the world. With vast amounts of data being processed in real time, AI-powered systems are automating decision-making and influencing industries at an unprecedented scale.

However, he also posed an ethical question: How will AI be used? Will it serve humanity, or will it become a tool for exploitation? He urged the audience to think critically about AI’s implications and the responsibilities that come with wielding such powerful technology.

The Call to Action: Preparing for a New World

Dr. Pitroda concluded his talk with an impassioned call to action for the young minds in attendance. He urged them to not merely be passive consumers of technology but to actively shape it.

“This generation has a unique opportunity to redefine the future,” he said. “Be conscious of your digital footprint, be mindful of the environment, and be prepared to navigate the uncertainties that AI and social media bring.”

His words left a lasting impression, inspiring students and academicians alike to think beyond conventional boundaries. As AI and social media continue to evolve, Dr. Pitroda’s vision serves as both a guide and a cautionary tale for the generations shaping the future.

The Social Media Paradox: Connection vs. Isolation

The original promise of social media was to connect people, but instead, it has created an ecosystem of isolation and alienation. People spend hours scrolling, engaging in virtual interactions while losing touch with real-world relationships. Children know how to navigate digital platforms but struggle with basic human interactions, such as playing with their neighbors. This shift has led to a generation that prioritizes virtual presence over real-life experiences.

The Business of Data: The Hidden Cost of Free Access

Social media platforms thrive on advertising revenue, with users unknowingly paying the price with their data. Every click, search, and purchase is tracked, stored, and monetized, creating a digital footprint that companies exploit for profit. While users enjoy free content, they sacrifice their privacy, allowing corporations to shape their online behavior and even influence their real-world decisions.

The Superficial Reality: The Need for Validation

Social media has transformed personal identity into a curated showcase. People are more focused on how they appear rather than who they truly are. The pressure to impress leads to a distorted sense of self-worth, where comparisons breed envy, and digital personas often overshadow authentic existence. The obsession with likes, shares, and validation has created an environment where reality is manufactured rather than lived.

The Missing Link: India’s Data Deficit

India, despite being home to one of the largest populations of internet users, lacks a significant presence in the digital information space. Languages like Hindi, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Bengali have minimal representation in global databases. Without structured data and localized digitization efforts, access to knowledge remains limited, restricting India’s ability to leverage technology for progress.

Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword

AI has the unparalleled ability to process vast amounts of information in seconds, revolutionizing research, administration, and decision-making. While it can enhance efficiency, it also raises ethical concerns. Misinformation, biased algorithms, and job displacement are unintended consequences that require urgent attention. The fundamental question remains—will AI simply amplify existing trends, or will it be used to achieve unprecedented advancements for humanity?

The Future of Digital Citizenship

In a world where digital interactions govern our lives, the concept of digital citizenship is yet to be clearly defined. What are the rights and responsibilities of an individual in a hyper-connected world? How do we ensure ethical governance of AI and social media? These pressing concerns demand global discourse to protect individual freedoms while fostering innovation.

AI and Social Media Governance: The Need for Ethical Oversight

As AI and social media become more embedded in daily life, the question of governance looms large. Governments and technology companies worldwide are grappling with how to regulate these platforms without stifling innovation. Regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe and India’s IT Rules have been implemented to address privacy concerns, misinformation, and digital rights. However, enforcing these laws effectively remains a challenge. While some advocate for stronger oversight to prevent data exploitation and misinformation, others fear excessive regulation could curb freedom of expression and slow technological progress. Striking a balance between innovation and ethical responsibility is critical to ensuring a fair digital future.

AI and Job Transformation: Preparing for the Future Workforce

AI is reshaping the global job market, automating tasks that were once performed exclusively by humans. While fears of job losses dominate discussions, AI is also creating new career opportunities in fields like biotechnology, renewable energy, and space exploration. The challenge lies in preparing the workforce for this shift. Skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and adaptability will be crucial for future professionals. Governments and educational institutions must invest in AI-driven education and reskilling programs to ensure that workers are not left behind. Instead of resisting automation, societies must find ways to integrate AI into workplaces in ways that empower human creativity and productivity.

Decentralization and the Future of the Internet

The current internet model is dominated by a few tech giants that control vast amounts of data. However, with the rise of Web3 and blockchain technology, decentralization is emerging as a viable alternative. Decentralized social media platforms and blockchain-based applications offer users more control over their data and online identities. Unlike traditional ad-driven platforms, these new models promise greater transparency and privacy. However, decentralization also presents regulatory and security challenges. As the internet evolves, users, policymakers, and tech developers must navigate this transformation carefully, ensuring that decentralization leads to empowerment rather than chaos.

The Psychological and Social Impact of AI

AI-driven personalization has revolutionized how people consume content, but it also poses significant risks. Social media algorithms create echo chambers that reinforce biases, shaping public opinion in ways that are not always accurate or ethical. AI-powered deepfakes, capable of manipulating images and videos, have raised concerns about misinformation, especially in political and media landscapes. Furthermore, the growing reliance on AI-generated content challenges traditional notions of authenticity. As AI continues to influence human perception, digital literacy and critical thinking must be prioritized to help individuals navigate the vast ocean of AI-generated information responsibly.

India’s Role in AI and Social Media Evolution

Despite being home to one of the world’s largest internet user bases, India faces challenges in AI research and digital content creation in regional languages. A significant portion of Indian internet users engage with content in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and Malayalam, yet these languages have minimal representation in global AI models and databases. To bridge this gap, India must invest in AI development tailored to its linguistic and cultural diversity. The rise of India-based AI start-ups and government initiatives like Digital India signal progress, but more efforts are needed to make AI technology accessible and inclusive for all sections of society.

Harini Shetty | Power of the I CAN Approach | Golden Heart and Bold Steps | Global TV

Everyone of us has immense power for Empowering Communities, Inspiring Change: The Journey of Harini Shetty is a Role Model | Global TV

Harini Shetty is a bold and steadfast advocate for women’s respect, rights and social justice. Her lifelong mission to empower marginalized communities is both inspiring and transformative. From her humble beginnings three decades ago in Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada, to becoming a recognized voice for sustainable development and good governance, Harini’s journey is a testimony to dedication, impulse reaction, unwavering determination, devotion, and selfless service.

The Spinner Wheel of Life

Life, much like a spinner wheel, often spins with no warning, offering outcomes that we may not expect or desire. Each turn brings a new challenge, a new chapter, and, sometimes, a new beginning. For Harini Shetty, the wheel of life spun in ways that no one could have predicted. From the loss of a fiancé to a marriage marred by hardship, her journey was shaped by both joy and sorrow, distress and courage. But with each turn of the wheel, Harini chose to continue the ride, embracing the uncertainty and ambiguity that came with it. It wasn’t always easy, but she always found a way to spin toward the next chapter of hope.

Her turning point came with love and loss. Before her engagement, her fiancé fell seriously ill with complications related to his pancreas. Despite various treatments and referrals to specialized care, his health deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away within just 60 days of being diagnosed.

The shadow of grief followed Harini until fate introduced her to a new chapter. She married a man, suggested by family, who would later become her husband. However, this marriage brought its own set of challenges. Harini endured ten years of hardship, as her husband struggled with severe alcoholism. Throughout this tumultuous period, Harini persevered as a young mother, emerging stronger with her daughter by her side as a symbol of hope.

These personal losses, heartbreaks, and struggles did not break Harini. Instead, they became the foundation of her strength, and she chose to rise above adversity. Her journey underscores how profound personal challenges can shape and fuel the will to make a difference in the world around you. Her problems had helped her to understand others’ problems and to help them to come out as well.
