In the small village of Berva in Thumbe Village of Dakshina Kannada, nestled amidst the tranquil fields of Karnataka, a boy was born to a humble teacher and farmer. Few could have imagined that this child, raised in the simplicity of rural life, would one day rise to become a towering figure in the Catholic Church and a great hope and support for countless individuals. This is the story of Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo; a journey of grit, grace, and greatness.

Humble Beginnings, Profound Lessons

Born on April 22, 1963, Fr. Faustine’s early life was anything but easy. His father, a schoolteacher and farmer, exemplified discipline and diligence, setting a high standard for his children. He was a man of unwavering principles, firm resolve, and clear values, embodying great discipline and focus. For Faustine, his father was his role model. He had literally imbibed the qualities in him as exactly and as perfectly that we see him with the kind of seriousness that his father had.

It is not that easy for someone even at the known circles to approach him with casual stuffs and silly thoughts. He look very serious and people take him more serious than what he is. He is always open to people who are dedicated and are true to themselves. He connects with people who are sincere, focused, and share a sense of purpose. This is how he had come up in life from his early childhood.

Neighbours would first approach his mother whenever they wanted an advice or needed to convey something to his father. Once she gave them the go-ahead, they would politely approach him and seek his advice on how to address the matter.    

The daily routine in his childhood was a delicate balance of studies, farm work, and familial responsibilities. He did all of them with dedication and diligence. It was a routine for him walking five miles to school and five miles back home, assisting with household chores, and fetching water from the well every day. It has become part of his nature and he could involve in them hundred percent.

Hardship did not discourage him. He never had even felt so. Instead, it fuelled his emotional resilience. He didn’t have much, but he had a strong will. He was proud to be the son of a well-respected teacher.  Young Faustine was lucky to be brought up in a systemic environment. He was giving hundred percent attention while doing whatever that he was doing. Reading was less. Study time was limited, but whatever read went right into his memory. He scored high marks in all exams; all because of his grasping power and photographic memory that he had developed in the childhood itself. Love what you do and be passionate about them; he says!

A Call to Serve: The Birth of a Priest

Fr. Faustine’s journey to the seminary wasn’t preordained; it was a calling that emerged gradually, nurtured by his deep faith and desire to serve. In 1981, he entered St. Joseph’s Seminary in Jeppu, Mangalore. A decade-long spiritual and academic formation. Ordained in 1990 at Milagres Church.

Fr. Faustine’s first significant challenge came in Bidar, a remote mission territory where he worked tirelessly with the underprivileged. He thought he was thrown out from the mainstream and there is no possibility of going back. Obedience was one of his prime virtues that he had learned at home. He took the remote posting very positively and had worked tirelessly. It was there that his resilience was tested and purpose reaffirmed: “The mission field taught me patience and compassion,” he said with a broad smile and with a sense of satisfaction.

The Reluctant Leader Who Excelled

At just 33, Fr. Faustine was thrust into the role of Director at Canara Organization for Development and Peace (CODP) Mangalore. It was a very high position, naturally reserved for senior priests. “I had no prior experience running such a significant organization, but I got into the challenge,” he shares.

For seven years, he transformed CODP into a dynamic force for social justice, addressing issues ranging from poverty to education. His philosophy was simple yet profound: “If you give your best, God will do the rest.” This mind-set would become his guiding principle, propelling him to even greater heights.

The National Stage: A Visionary’s Rise

In 2011, Fr. Faustine was appointed National Director of Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS). This was a role of immense prestige and responsibility. He was chosen for this post on account of his unparalleled dedication and track record in comparison with candidates with advanced academic credentials.

During his tenure, Fr. Faustine redefined the role of missionary work in India. He brought innovation, accountability, and collaboration to the forefront, ensuring that the Church’s outreach programs touched the lives of the most marginalized. His work got recognised and he was later invited to join PMS International’s Finance Committee. He was the first Indian to hold such a position.

His tenure as Secretary of the Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights further cemented his reputation as a defender of justice and equality.

A Champion of Empowerment

Fr. Faustine Lobo’s social impact extends far beyond the Church. He has been a relentless advocate for human rights, particularly for marginalized groups like domestic workers. By establishing networks like Bandhavya and registering labour rights organizations, he has given a voice to the voiceless.

His tele-serial Divya Sannidhi, showcasing the historical churches of Karnataka, reflects his creative spirit and ability to blend faith with culture. With 104 episodes aired, the series was a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless viewers.

New Horizons: A Visionary’s Next Chapter

As Fr. Faustine prepares to assume leadership at the Father Muller Charitable Institutions in 2025, he reflects on the journey that brought him here. “Every role I’ve taken was an opportunity to glorify God and uplift others,” he says. His plans for Father Muller Institutions include expanding healthcare, education, and social outreach, ensuring that the institution becomes a lighthouse for those in need.

Legacy of Faith, Hope, and Determination

Fr. Faustine Lobo’s life is a master class in leadership, service, and unwavering faith. From humble beginnings in Berva to holding some of the most prestigious positions in the Church, he has shown that true greatness lies in serving others.

His story of total involvement and deeper dedication on all that comes on the way is a true role model. Challenges are stepping stones, not roadblocks. That is the take away. His life’s philosophy as mentioned earlier “Do your best, and let God do the rest” talks about his person and vision much louder.

He is an authentic leader. As he continues his journey, Fr. Faustine remains a shining example of what it means to lead with heart, inspire with vision, and serve with humility. Despite facing numerous challenges, Fr. Lobo persevered and went on to achieve great things. His journey was not without its obstacles, but he learned to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. His philosophy of “putting in minimum effort and getting maximum results” may seem unconventional, but it has served him well throughout his life. That’s how he had managed to take up various works. World is changing constantly. But the changes are very slow and miniscule. True transformation is a very quick phenomena. It often begins with dissatisfaction and take things by storm to destruct the existing and to recreate everything new.  

But, the model of Shiv Nadar shows us about how to handle when we know the possibility of dissatisfaction. Better we initiate a transformation from within the system and retain the dissatisfied people from quitting from our fold. This is one of the great lessons to be learned from the great stories of HCL. We should know when the status quo no longer serves the purpose it was designed for.

The story of HCL Technologies and its visionary founder, Shiv Nadar, is a very inspirational one. The way he embraced people close to his heart is monumental to learn and to imbibe within our systems and settings. HCL model presents a blueprint for real transformation without any negation, rejection or revenge along with considerable community and social development. Progress begins when we are able to come together and question what is existing and are able to envision what could be done to transform them. Dissatisfaction on universal matters like hunger should spark transformation at local levels. It is not that you feed your child showing hungry children in Africa. You should take it as a global issue existing at your locality as well. Identify universal issues locally and encourage individuals and organizations to address them locally.

Reflect on every areas in your current state, identify stagnation, and act decisively towards improvement. Challenge inequalities, inefficiencies, or outdated systems that hinder growth. Find better ways and collectively address them peacefully. It is nothing but creating viable revenue models in every issues around. There are no issues that cannot be handled collectively by the society. Those who challenge this philosophy are those who are aware of the power of it very much.

Great Shiv Nadar; Early Life and Entrepreneurial Spirit

Shiv Nadar was born in 1945 in Tamil Nadu, India. He grew up in a family of modest means. His father was a government employee, and the family faced financial constraints. Despite these challenges, Shiv Nadar showed an early passion for learning. He was deeply curious about technology and how things worked.

This curiosity shaped his academic pursuits. He enrolled at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore. There, he earned a degree in electrical engineering. His education laid the foundation for his future endeavors. It also fueled his dream of doing something impactful in the field of technology.

Can we learn lessons from The Birth of HCL and replicate the same in our social development scenario today?

In 1976, Shiv Nadar co-founded Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL). The company began its journey in a small garage in Delhi. The vision was very ambitious and he truly wanted to put India on the global IT map.

The early days were full of hurdles. Resources were scarce, and the market for IT in India was still nascent. But Shiv Nadar was determined. He believed that India had the potential to become a global leader in technology.

Together with a team of like-minded individuals, he started the company with a focus on innovation. They worked tirelessly, often making personal sacrifices. Their belief in their mission kept them going.

HCL’s journey was not an easy one. They had to navigate a market that was still warming up to the concept of personal computing. Yet, Shiv Nadar and his team stayed resolute. They were willing to take risks and think big.

Slowly but surely, their efforts began to pay off. HCL not only survived those early challenges but thrived. It emerged as one of the first companies in India to design and manufacture computers. This was a revolutionary step at the time.

SDM Law College Celebrates Golden Jubilee with Alumni Meet and Endowment Lecture | Global TV

Attorney General Addresses Technology and Law at SDM Law College’s Golden Jubilee

Mangaluru, December 16: The Alumni Meet and the 11th Silver Jubilee Endowment Lecture were held on the second day (December 15) of the two-day Golden Jubilee Celebrations (Suvarna Patha) of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (SDM) Law College, Mangalore.

The events took place at TMA Pai International Convention Centre.

Dr. R. Venkataramani, Attorney General of India, delivered the Silver Jubilee Endowment Lecture. He spoke about how technology is replacing manpower and highlighted the limitations of relying solely on technology for decision-making.

Dr. Venkataramani praised Dr. Veerendra Heggade’s vision to establish a law college. He emphasized the connection between Dharmasthala and the concept of Dharma, which he said played a key role in the college’s successful 50-year journey.

Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, President of the SDM Educational Society, noted that earlier, studying law was considered a last option. However, this has changed due to the quality of education now being provided.

He stressed the importance of taking the study of law seriously to achieve success and contribute to society. He also highlighted the benefits of the five-year law course over the three-year course, stating that it leads to better learning outcomes.

Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, in a written message read during the event, credited SDM Law College for his success. He mentioned that, despite being a backbencher, he became Speaker of the Assembly thanks to the education he received at the college. He described advocacy as a profession with great social responsibility, calling advocates ambassadors of the Indian Constitution.

Guests of honour included Additional Advocate General of Karnataka Shahul Hameed Rahman, Former Principal Prof. A. Rajendra Shetty, Retired Kerala High Court Judge Antony Dominic, Retired Karnataka High Court Judge Michael D’Cunha, Retired IAS Officer Sham Bhat, and Symbiosis Law School Director Dr. Shashikala Gurupur. They were all felicitated during the event.

Dr. Devraj K., President of the Alumni Association, gave an overview of the association’s activities. A special Golden Jubilee edition titled ‘Sustainability and Consumer Protection’ was released.

Other dignitaries present included SDME Society Secretary Dr. Satheeshchandra S., PTA President Purushothama Bhat, Mangalore Bar Association President and alumnus H. V. Raghavendra Rao, Advisor and alumnus Dinakar Shetty, and Cultural Coordinator and alumna Soujanya Hegde. Presidents of alumni chapters and bar associations from Kerala, Puttur, Moodubidire, and Kasargod were also in attendance.

The college Principal, Dr. Tharanatha, and Alumni Association staff coordinators Maheshchandra Nayak and Santhosh Kumar also participated in the event.

Vice President of the Alumni Association, Uday Prakash Muliya, welcomed the guests, while Secretary Sathish B. K. delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Assistant Professors Meghna R. Anand and Amith S. M.

What happens in the childhood lay the foundation for emotional responses and behavior patterns even in their adulthood.

Here are the four primary causes of such conflicts, explained in greater detail:

Fear: Fear often stems from early encounters with danger, failure, or rejection. For instance, a child who grows up in an environment of unpredictability or harsh criticism may internalize a sense of impending threat or insecurity.

This could manifest later in life as avoidance behaviors, over-cautiousness, or difficulty trusting others. Fear acts as a protective mechanism.

Frustration: Frustration arises when individuals perceive barriers to achieving their goals, desires, or expectations. A child who consistently faces unfulfilled needs for attention, validation, or resources may develop feelings of helplessness or resentment. In adulthood, this can turn into different forms.

Impatience, chronic dissatisfaction or difficulty adapting to setbacks are common forms of its reflections. Frustration often fuels conflicts, as individuals project their unresolved emotions onto others. The blame game take us nowhere.

Anxiety; Anxiety often originates from uncertainty and unpredictability during childhood. A child who grows up in a chaotic or overly critical environment may develop a persistent sense of worry or unease. This anxiety can become deeply ingrained, influencing how we perceive and respond to future uncertainties.

In adulthood, it may manifest as chronic overthinking, avoidance of challenges, or an inability to stay present in the moment. The child manifest on and often.

By understanding the root causes, individuals can gain clarity on their emotional triggers and begin the process of addressing and resolving their conflicts. While many individuals naturally overcome these issues with time, life experiences, or guidance from teachers, parents, and mentors, others may carry these unresolved emotions into adulthood.   • Lack of Boundaries: Poorly defined personal boundaries in relationships, leading to misunderstandings and emotional strain.

The Consequences of Unresolved Conflicts

When conflicts are ignored, they can escalate, causing harm not only to the individual but also to their family, colleagues, and community. Individuals suffering from these unresolved issues may develop maladaptive coping mechanisms such as:

  • Substance abuse.
  • Aggression or withdrawal.
  • Emotional manipulation or avoidance.

Mangaluru Dec 14: Students of St. Aloysius (Deemed to be university) presented a four-line “Chaupadi Charoli” (a type of poetic form) in 20 different Indian languages to convey the Christmas message written by Raymond D’cuna Taccode.

The following students recited the poem in their respective languages:

English: Anvitha D’cuna, Hindi: Ansylla Kero, Odia: Priyadarshini, Telugu: Anusha Balmala, Konkani: Jenith Rego, Malayalam: Emin Binoy, Zomi: Zomir Linda, Bengali: C. Roshni Lakra, Kannada: Navya P., Mizo: C. Jesintha, Marathi: Charlotte, Khasi: Isukh, Khandiyal: Ranjith, Sanskrit: Anup R. Aithal, Sinhalese: Thivinda Jude Kurve, Tamil: Sonali R., Urdu: Umar Farooq, Tulu: Niharika M. Bangera, Bengali: Barry Mohammed Mafaz, French: Vandan

During the event, a cake was cut, and Christmas sweets ‘Kuswar’ were shared with the gathered poets and invitees. Dr Alwyn V D’Sa , the Registrar of St. Aloysius Autonomous College, spoke about the importance of Christmas, describing it as a symbol of patience, brotherhood, forgiveness, and unconditional love. He emphasized that true joy comes when we forgive with a heart full of celebration and happiness.

Along with Dr Alwyn V D’Sa, Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Charoli Sahitya Parishad(ABKCSP) President Raymond D’cuna Taccode, the National President of the All-India Chaupadi Literature Academy, M.P. Srinath, the Vice President of the Karnataka Kannada Sahitya Parishad, businessman Chandrahasa Shetty, poet group coordinator Dr. Suresh Negalaguli, Tuluvere Kala Sangha member Geetha Laxmish, professors Severin, Lovelyn, Konkani Department HOD Flora Castileno, Konkani Association Secretary Rahul Mendonca, Russel Dmello and students Anvitha D’cuna and Michelle Fernandes, who were the event organizers.

A multi-lingual poetry session was held with poets like Dr. Suresh Negalaguli, Ayesha Perne, Chetan H.M., Anarkali Saleem, Gopalakrishna Shastri, Dr. Maithri Bhatt Vitle, Venkatesh Gatti, Geetha Lakshmish, Ratna Bhatt, William Allipade, Rani Pushpa Latha Devi, and Gangadhar Gandhi. After the event, Kuswar was distributed to everyone.

The Konkani students of St. Aloysius (Deemed to be university) successfully managed the responsibilities of the Christmas exhibition, showcasing the birth of Jesus, and distributing signatures as part of the celebration.

Raymond Dcuna Taccode welcomed the gathering, and Sevrin proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Jeethan and Livia Rodrigues.

Held at the historic Cascia Church Hall in Morgan’s Gate, the event drew a vibrant and diverse gathering of people united by faith, joy, and the message of peace.

The celebration was graced by esteemed dignitaries from various Christian denominations. Among them were Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore; His Grace Yakoob Mar Elias, Bishop of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Brahmavar; and Rt. Rev. Hemachandra Kumar, Bishop of the Church of South India, Karnataka Southern Diocese. Their presence symbolized unity among Christian communities and underscored the spirit of mutual respect and collaboration that Christmas embodies.

In his address, Bishop Hemachandra Kumar delivered an inspiring message emphasizing the importance of harmony and togetherness, values central to the Christmas season. “Let us live in harmony, blessed by the love of Christ,” he urged, calling on everyone to transcend differences and embrace one another in the spirit of brotherhood.

The program included a variety of cultural performances that captivated the audience. Enthusiastic participants showcased traditional and contemporary dances, soulful Christmas carols, and heartfelt skits, each creatively reflecting the joy and deeper meaning of Christmas. The Bishops commended the performers for their efforts, noting how the artistic presentations beautifully conveyed the timeless message of hope, love, and reconciliation.

Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha, in his address, reminded everyone of the profound simplicity and humility of Christ’s birth. “Christmas calls us to see the face of Christ in the less fortunate, the marginalized, and those who need our compassion,” he said. His Grace Yakoob Mar Elias echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of being messengers of peace in a world often divided by discord.

The event also featured a special interdenominational choir, which performed popular carols such as “O Holy Night” and “Silent Night,” leaving the audience in awe and reflection. Their harmonious voices spread the true essence of the season, inspiring the participants to carry the spirit of Christmas into their daily lives.

The use of technology has also enabled increased revenue collection; for whom; God Knows!

On the other hand, road repair and maintenance often seem to be stuck in a time warp. Despite the importance of well-maintained roads for public safety, economic growth, and quality of life, the methods used for road repair are often labor-intensive, time-consuming, and ineffective. The use of traditional materials and techniques can lead to roads that are prone to damage, require frequent repairs, and pose safety risks to users.

This disparity between modern toll collection and traditional road repair methods is not only striking but also raises important questions. Can we not leverage technology and innovation to improve road repair and maintenance? Can we not allocate a portion of the toll revenue towards investing in modern road repair techniques and materials?

It is time for us to rethink our approach to road maintenance and repair. By embracing technology, innovation, and modern methods, we can create safer, more durable, and more sustainable roads. It is only by addressing this disparity that we can truly say that our roads are fit for the 21st century. It is important to invest the money collected on the Road for the Road.
