Unlocking Mangaluru’s Tourism Empire: Action Over Ambition
By BN Girish, Senior Vice President & Country Head, The Ocean Pearl, Mangaluru
Mangaluru is sitting on a goldmine of unfulfilled potential. We boast a unique coastline, scenic riverways, rich heritage sites, and a culinary reputation known across the globe. Yet, year after year, we watch other coastal hubs leave us behind simply because we treat tourism as a luxury rather than an economic engine.
If we want to transform Mangaluru into a world-class tourist destination, we must stop making vague promises and start fixing the ground realities that hit visitors the moment they arrive.
1. Fix the Basics: Cleanliness and Infrastructure
A tourist’s first impression determines whether they ever return.
- Garbage-Free Beaches: Coastal stretches must have dedicated, round-the-clock solid waste management systems. Beautiful beaches mean nothing if litter lines the shoreline.
- Basic Amenities: Clean public restrooms, well-maintained changing rooms, and adequate lighting near major sites are non-negotiable prerequisites.
- Navigational Ease: Clear bilingual signage, proper parking spaces near hotspots, and seamless road connectivity are essential to moving visitors through our city without frustration.
2. Diversify the Experience
Tourism isn’t just about standing on a beach at sunset. We need a structured master plan that builds a complete leisure ecosystem. That means actively developing regulated water sports, promoting eco-tourism along our backwaters, and scheduling cultural heritage festivals that bring our coastal history to life.
3. Save the Engine: Real Relief for the Hospitality Industry
The food and hotel sector is the backbone of our local economy. It creates thousands of direct jobs and feeds business into local farmers, fishermen, and transport operators. Yet hoteliers are currently battling soaring operational costs, high commercial power rates, and endless bureaucratic red tape.
To build a thriving ecosystem, the government must take three direct steps:
- Industry Status: Formally accord “Industry” status to hospitality to reduce heavy tariff burdens.
- Utility Concessions: Provide subsidized electricity tariffs and uninterrupted water supply dedicated to hospitality units.
- Ease of Doing Business: Streamline licensing procedures into a single-window portal so local operators can focus on service, not paperwork.
Mangaluru has everything it needs to be Karnataka’s coastal jewel—all that is missing is targeted execution. When local government and industry stakeholders align behind a concrete master plan, we won’t just attract tourists; we will build a sustainable economic foundation for generations to come.
