Today, December 8, 2024, marks the 7th death anniversary of the multifaceted and illustrious Dr. Arunachalam Kumar. A renowned anatomist, researcher, and academician, Dr. Kumar left an indelible mark on the world of medicine and beyond.

Born on April 27, 1949, Dr. Kumar’s academic journey began at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, where he studied medicine and later became a professor and head of the anatomy department. His illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he held various prestigious positions, including Dean of KSHEMA and Director (R&D) at Nitte University.

Dr. Kumar’s intellectual curiosity and passion for knowledge were unparalleled. He authored numerous scientific papers, articles, and books, and his research interests ranged from anatomy and medicine to ornithology, computer science, and sociology. His prediction of Sachin Tendulkar’s back injury based on the cricketer’s batting posture is a testament to his extraordinary analytical mind.

A true rationalist, Dr. Kumar was a founding member of the Dakshina Kannada Rationalist Association. His courage and stoicism in the face of adversity were inspiring, and his commitment to rational thinking remained unwavering even in his final days.

Life is a journey through an ever-changing landscape, one that fluctuates between moments of joy and periods of struggle. These highs and lows are not merely fleeting events; they are crucial experiences that define our character and direction. Joy fills our hearts with hope and possibility, but it is often through struggle that we truly understand our strength and resilience. In moments of misery, we encounter our deepest fears and limitations. Yet, it is here that the seeds of transformation are sown. Kothamangalam Kozhipilly Chackiyath Joseph (Jose College) (79) passed away on 20 November 2024. Funeral ceremony was conducted at Kothamangalam St. George Cathedral Church. He is survived by his wife Baby (from Iringalakuda Kandamkulathy family), children Bijo, Bini, and Binu, and grandchildren Anu, Anoop, and Benette.

Global TV remembers his compassion and care for students and cherish his kindness with fond memories during the eighties. He was a visionary educator and the founder principal of Jose College, Kothamangalam. The college was one of the reputed colleges in the region in those days.

Legacy of Prof. Joseph Chakkiyath extends far beyond the institution’s walls. He was a pioneering spirit, dedicating his life to shaping minds and fostering growth. As principal, he nurtured Jose College into an Icon of excellence, imparting knowledge, values, and character to generations. His leadership, guidance, and unwavering commitment to education transformed countless lives.

Prof. Yathish Kumar’s journey with NCC began as a caretaker, and he eventually went on to complete his pre-commission training. He has since become a respected figure in the NCC community, earning accolades for his performance in refresher programs. When asked about his experience as a PhD guide, Prof. Kumar fondly recalls his own PhD journey, which he completed in 2004 under the guidance of Prof. Yashavantha Dongre, now the Vice-Chancellor of Chanakya University.

Present Position
Dr. Yathish Kumar currently serves as a Professor and Coordinator of MBA (IB) and MCom programs at the University Evening College, Mangalore. He is the former Head of the Department of BBA and the former Coordinator of the Department of Postgraduate Studies in Commerce at University College, Mangalore.

He has also held the positions of Coordinator of Open University, Regional Centre of Mangalore University, and Coordinator of the Department of MCom and MBA at the University Evening College, Mangalore. Additionally, he has served as the Principal/Coordinator of University College, Nellyadi, a constituent college of Mangalore University.

Dr. Kumar holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the NCC Naval Unit, showcasing his dedication to discipline and leadership.

Mangalore, 6th December – The Government of Karnataka, reaffirming its commitment to fostering technology-driven growth and industrial innovation, hosted a specialized SME Connect interactive session. This initiative was organized in collaboration with Flipkart, Federal Bank, FICCI, and Kanara Chamber of Commerce And Industry, as part of preparations for the upcoming Global Investors Meet, Invest Karnataka 2025. The effort aims to build a digitally advanced and globally competitive industrial ecosystem across the state.

The session featured insightful discussions led by Mr. Gokuldas Naik, Joint Director, Department of Industries and Commerce, GoK, Mr. Nilesh Kumar, Associate Director of Corporate Affairs at Flipkart, Mr. Rajeev VC, Regional Head of Federal Bank, Mr. K Ullas Kamath, Chairman, FICCI, Mr. Vasuki Kashyap, NASSCOM, and Mr. P B Ahmed Mudassar, Vice President, KCCI. These industry leaders shared actionable insights on adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, enhancing export capabilities to position SMEs as global suppliers, leveraging e-commerce platforms for growth, accessing tailored financial solutions, and utilizing government portals to connect with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and buyers across sectors. Participants were also encouraged to leverage networking opportunities through FICCI to expand their business prospects.

A key highlight was the unveiling of the SME Connect portal, developed by the Invest Karnataka Forum. This portal bridges the gap between SMEs and buyers or OEMs at local, national, and international levels. It addresses critical challenges faced by micro and small enterprises, such as marketing their products and connecting with the right customers, enabling seamless market expansion.

Beyond insights into exports, finance, e-commerce, and business continuity, the session provided a comprehensive overview of strategies for navigating today’s dynamic business landscape. MSME entrepreneurs engaged with industry experts, enhancing their knowledge and equipping themselves to innovate and thrive in competitive markets.

This initiative underscores Karnataka’s vision of transforming its industrial landscape while nurturing a robust and resilient SME ecosystem. By empowering SMEs as pivotal contributors to the state’s economic growth, the Government is ensuring they are well-prepared to seize opportunities at Invest Karnataka 2025.

Similar SME Connect interactive sessions are scheduled in Mysore on 11th December and Kalaburagi on 17th December, further expanding outreach and engagement across the state.

Enlightening Conversation with a High Priest: Unveiling the Power of Revenue Models

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting a high priest from a renowned order. Our conversation began with a question from the high priest: “What is your business model?” he asked, referring to Global TV.

I smiled and replied, “We don’t have a business model; we’re working on a sustainable and meaningful revenue model.”

The priest looked puzzled. “What’s the difference?” he asked.

I explained, “A business model is often focused on short-term gains and can be fragile. A revenue model, on the other hand, is a framework that outlines how we develop and expand our vision through sustainable social interventions.”

The priest’s expression changed from confusion to curiosity. “I see,” he said. “So, you’re saying that a revenue model is more sustainable and progressive?”

I nodded. “Exactly! A revenue model is all about adding one step before asking someone to make a contribution. Create value and generate income through sustainable means.”

Give me an example; the priest asked! I was waiting for that.

Reduced Human Relationship is the biggest issue in the world. We should engage large number of people to address this issue locally and globally. Elder Care is another matter of concern…

I said; “the biggest issue that the world is facing today is in the missing human relations. People do not have time for others. We are running for creating a better future for us and our generations. We are not satisfied with whatever we have achieved so far.”

“Take this as an opportunity. Inspire and involve people to connect with each other. Do create revenue models for sustainability of the project. Leave it to the people to make it in their own ways. They will definitely follow the principles of the church. You need not set controls, but you can guide them wherever required.”

“Tell them to contribute 10% of each one’s profit towards, 8% for feeding the poor and 2% for the church expenses. It is big money, when done on a large scale. But, the project fails in the moment you involve yourself into the project. Focus on your mission and abstain from putting your hands into all baskets.”      

In that moment, the priest had a paradigm shift. He realized that a revenue model was not just a business concept, but a way to create sustainable value for his community. And that’s a lesson that can benefit us all.
