തടാകത്തിനരുകിലെത്തിയ വനദേവതമാരുടെ ചിന്തകളെ ശരിവക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു തടാകത്തിൻ്റെ അവസ്ഥ. തെളിനീർ നിറഞ്ഞു തുളുമ്പി നിന്നിരുന്ന ആ തടാകം കരഞ്ഞു കരഞ്ഞു ഉപ്പുതടാകമായിരിക്കുന്നു. നീ കരഞ്ഞുപോയതിൽ അത്ഭുതമില്ല. കോമളനായ ആ ബാലനെ ഏറെ അടുത്തുനിന്ന് കാണാൻ ഭാഗ്യം ലഭിച്ചത് നിനക്ക് മാത്രമാണല്ലോ; വനദേവതമാരിൽ ഒരാൾ പറഞ്ഞു.

പെട്ടെന്ന് തോന്നിയ ഒരു ബുദ്ധിയിൽ അവൻ വീടുവിട്ടിറങ്ങി. കയ്യിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ഇരുപത് രൂപ. മംഗലാപുരത്തു അടുത്ത ഒരു മാസം. ആളുകളുമായി പെട്ടെന്ന് ഇണങ്ങി ചേരുന്ന അവൻ്റെ പ്രകൃതം അവന് സഹായമായി. പക്ഷെ പുതിയൊരു പ്രശ്നം അവനെ അസ്വസ്ഥപ്പെടുത്തി. അവനെക്കുറിച്ചു പത്രങ്ങളിൽ വന്ന വാർത്തകൾ ആയിരുന്നു.
