Kerala is truly God’s Own Country. We are blessed with beautiful rivers, green hills, backwaters, beaches and a rich culture. But our greatest treasure is not our land or our natural beauty. It is our people. Kerala has produced generations of educated, skilled and talented people who have made their mark across India and in many parts of the world. Yet, we have not fully discovered the power of bringing these people together.
Education is the key of Kerala’s development. For many years, education has opened doors for ordinary people and helped them build better lives. A child from a small village in Kerala can become a doctor, teacher, engineer, scientist, artist or business professional. Many of them have travelled far from home and built successful lives in other countries. They carry with them knowledge, experience, memories and valuable relationships. This is the treasure that Kerala must recognise.
In this sense, we can compare ourselves with the Arabs before the discovery of oil. The treasure was already beneath their feet, but its enormous value was not yet known. Forefathers of the Arabs slept hungry keeping the treasure underneath. Kerala too has a treasure that is already with us. It is spread among our people. It is in the experiences of our elderly, the knowledge of our teachers, the dreams of our young people and the achievements of Keralites living across the world. Our task is not to search for money. Our task is to discover people and connect them.
The first step can be a Listeners Club. Listening is a simple but powerful act. We can create spaces where people can tell their stories and others can listen. An elderly person can speak about the Kerala of his or her childhood. A teacher can talk about students who changed his or her life. A migrant worker can share the lessons learned from years abroad. A young person can speak about hopes and fears. When we listen to one another, we discover experiences that might otherwise disappear.
The Listeners Club can also connect generations. Young people often know very little about the lives of the people who came before them. At the same time, older people may not fully understand the world in which young people are growing up. A simple conversation can build a bridge between them. Career Boosters can bring students into direct contact with people who have already travelled the path they are considering. A student may not know what a particular profession is really like. A conversation with someone in that field can provide practical guidance. It can also help young people understand that success does not always come easily. Life Stories can help us understand that achievement is not measured only by wealth or position. A good teacher, a caring parent, a dedicated nurse, an honest worker or a person who helped others can influence many lives. Recording these stories can preserve the memories of our communities and inspire future generations. It can also help people see value in their own lives. Sometimes people do not realise the importance of their experiences until someone takes the time to listen.
These three segments can become a simple way of bringing people together. Listeners Club can focus on listening. Career Boosters can connect experience with opportunity. Life Stories can preserve the memories and wisdom of our people. Together, they can create a culture in which people share what they know and learn from one another. The idea is not to create another large institution. It is to create connections between people who are already part of the same larger community.
Technology gives us a wonderful opportunity to take this idea beyond Kerala. A student in Kannur can speak with a professional in Canada. A teacher in Thrissur can meet a former student living in Dubai. A young person in Kollam can listen to the story of a Malayali working in Australia. A retired professional can guide students without leaving home. Geography no longer needs to separate people who share the same roots. We can use technology to bring them closer.
Kerala has already built a strong foundation through education. Our next step can be to connect the people whom education has empowered. We should not look at our global Malayali community only as people who have gone abroad. They are part of Kerala’s wider family. They carry knowledge, memories, skills and experiences from different parts of the world. If we create ways for these people to meet, listen, guide and inspire one another, a new kind of social strength can emerge.
The treasure is already here. It is in our people. We do not need to begin with investment. We can begin with a conversation. We can begin by listening to one person and connecting that person with another. From Listeners Club to Career Boosters and Life Stories, the purpose is simple. Bring people together. Let them share their experiences. Let young people learn from those who came before them. Let our global community reconnect with its roots. Kerala has always been rich in education and human talent. Now it is time to discover the treasure that lies within its people.
